Privy Council president and elder statesman Prem Tinsulanonda said on Wednesday he was contemplating how long Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha would need to lead the nation to success - and that he would support him all the way.

Gen Prem made the remark when Gen Prayut took cabinet ministers and armed forces chiefs to extend their Thai New Year (Songkran) wishes at his Si Sao Thewes residence in Bangkok.

"Today I try to keep up with the news to find out how long the prime minister will need to lead the country to success," Gen Prem said. "I am confident I can be a positive force in helping the prime minister to successfully administer the nation," he added.

During the meeting, Gen Prem, 97, asked after Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon. Gen Prayut replied that Gen Prawit was on medical leave related to his past heart surgery.

Gen Prayut said his delegation wished Gen Prem good health, and that they would adhere to Gen Prem's guidelines in working for the national interest.

He also said that the government was preparing the country for future challenges, including possible trade wars.

As he left Gen Prem's residence, Gen Prayut told cabinet ministers and the chiefs of the armed forces that for the sake of the national interest, they should keep the promises they had made to Gen Prem.
