Gemma Collins makes her West End debut - and she's bagged the perfect role

The rumours are true – Gemma Collins really has landed a role in a production of Chicago and will be taking to the stage to sing and dance for her supper.

Speculation arose earlier this month that the 41-year-old reality star sensation would be playing the role of prison governor Mama Morton in a stage production of the hit musical.

And now the star herself has confirmed the exciting news, revealing she will indeed be taking on the role and performing for audiences up and down the UK.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Gemma announced to her fans and followers that she will be playing the role – with her first dates on stage just a few short weeks away.

Uploading a snap of her flanked by male dancers, the star wrote: “It’s official! I’m gonna be joining @chicagoonstage playing Matron ‘Mama’ Morton from Tues 31st May 2022!”

She will be playing the role until the end of July with performance dates in Sunderland, Cardiff, Blackpool, Sheffield, Norwich and Oxford.

The star added in her statement: "I’m so excited #allthatjazz #GCdoesChicago."

Meanwhile, British theatre producer David Ian told the MailOnline: “We were completely stunned by Gemma's audition.

“She's an undeniable force both on and off stage, and we can't wait to see her portrayal of Mama Morton on tour.

“Audiences across the country are in for a treat!”

The reality star is taking over the role from Sinitta – who has been starring on stage in the production of the crime-thriller musical since the latter half of last year.

While Gemma is known to most as a cast member of The Only Way Is Essex, she has got roots in the world of live performing.

In her youth, the blonde bombshell studied dance and landed a place at the renowned Sylvia Young Theatre School in London.

And she is set to join a cast of familiar faces in the production of Chicago which includes stars of the small screen and stage.

Former Coronation Street star Faye Brookes, is taking on the lead role of Roxie Hart, while performers Djalenga Scott, Jamie Baughan and B.E. Wong are playing the roles Velma Kelly, Amos Hart and Mary Sunshine respectively.

A source previously ruined the surprise that Gemma was going to take on a role in the show, telling The Sun earlier this month: “Gemma has been in secret talks about playing Mama Morton for some time and is very excited about the opportunity.

“She has not signed anything yet as there are still issues to be ironed out with the agreement. But all being well, she will sign in the coming days.”

News of her casting has delighted fans, with one commenting on her Instagram post: “It’s finally time!! Seeing you do this is a dream come true for you!” alongside various heart emojis.
