Gemma Atkinson teaches daughter to be 'kind' to animals at sanctuary before sharing her unusual request

Gemma Atkinson's daughter and two dogs are already the best of friends but the Hits Radio host has spent her Sunday teaching her daughter about a rescue centre close to her heart. Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary is a place Gemma visited regularly growing up.

And now with a public profile having starred in Emmerdale and Hollyoaks to name but a few, the soap star has continued to show her support for the Bury-based animal sanctuary and is the charity's president.

On Sunday Gemma and daughter Mia, two, down to Bleakholt which isn't home to just dogs but also cats to horses and farm animals. Sharing a video to her Instagram Story, the mum-of-one wrote: "Brought Mia up to @bleakholt_animal_sanctuary today to drop off some food off."

The video featured Gemma, dressed in a white hoodie with a dark pair of shared, and Mia, in a fluffy hooded jumper, outside. Just as it begins you can hear the toddler saying: "We're at Bleakholt," before Gemma adds: "There's lots of animals here that need looking after."

She then asked her little girl: "Have you seen any that you like?" to which she replies: "Yeah," before pointing with Gemma pulling an emotional face as she said: "The doggy ones!"

"That's why you always have to be nice to animals isn't it?" Gemma said before adding: "Yeah? Be nice to them." Mia then asked her mum what else is here and as her mum reeled them off, Mia replied: "I want to see some cats."

The pair then headed off to see some more animals as Gemma wrote alongside her videos: "We saw the donkeys and rabbits and she asked why the dogs were here and not at home people..." But then she did have an unusual request.

"And in the car on the way home she asked me if we could have a pig and call her Maureen," Gemma wrote with a string of crying laughing face emojis.

It comes after Gemma, who played Lisa Hunter in C4's Hollyoaks and Carly Hope in ITV's Emmerdale, shared a video of her daughter petting one of their family dogs, Ollie and Norman. Then a second photo shows the youngster flat out next to the sleeping pup. " Family member, best friend and guardian angel all in one… Dogs," Gemma captioned the post.

And it completely melted fans' hearts. @paulacoghill said: "Adorable and what a bond they have." @karladaniellala commented: "This is so so precious and beautiful." @peggylamb1982 wrote: "They’re just the BEST part of the family aren’t they."

@littlelynds1 replied: "They have such an amazing bond. It’s so lovely to see." @claresmith46 added: "This is gorgeous! Dogs are the best."
