Gemma Atkinson seeks fans advice over concern dog Ollie has dementia

Gemma Atkinson has asked fans for help after noticing her dog's changing behaviour.

The Hits Radio presenter had two beloved pooches, Ollie and Norman.

Gemma, 36, is regularly gushing about her dogs on social media and is the president of Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary in Bury.

But the mum-of-one took to Instagram to seek advice from her 1.6m followers after Ollie started "acting a little off."

She wrote: "Has anyone on here ever had a dog with dementia? Ollie has recently started acting a little off… he’s so energetic & happy but in the evenings he now goes and sits alone outside sometimes for up to an hour."

She added: "He also sometimes just sits and stares… it’s come on over the last month or so and is happening more often," alongside a sad face emoji.

Gemma, who is mum to daughter Mia, later updated her followers by saying: "Thank you guys. Appreciate the replies and glad it's not just Ollie.

"I guess old age eventually gets us all (if we’re lucky!)"

But Gemma was not too wrong in being concerned as pets can suffer a similar disease to humans - but not specifically dementia.

The PDSA say animals get something called Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) which is commonly thought of as dementia in pets.

It goes on to explain that it affects ageing pets and causes problems with their memory, confusion, anxiety and disorientation – much like Alzheimer's in humans.
