Gemma Arterton not impressed by "Yac Donalds" yak burgers during Black Narcissus shoot

Actress Gemma Arterton refused to eat yak burgers in Nepal after befriending two of the animals.

The Bond girl was shaken and stirred in a local eaterie.

The shaggy wild ox is a popular Nepalese delicacy – but it was not to Gemma’s taste as she filmed BBC drama Black Narcissus.

Gemma, 34, said: “They had a place called Yac Donalds, which we all got very excited about.

“People come from all over the world... you can have yak burgers and yak butter.

“I met two yaks on the first few days of filming and they were so sweet, I was like, ‘I cannot possibly eat a yak’. But I tried the butter and milk… I guess they are not too far away from cows.”

Black Narcissus, on BBC1 on three consecutive nights from tonight, is about an order of nuns who set up a school and hospital in an abandoned palace in the Himalayas.

The show was filmed in Nepal last Christmas – which Gemma said now “feels like a lifetime ago”.

Speaking to the BFI, Gemma, who plays repressed nun Sister Clodagh, said: “It took us two-and-a-half days to get to where we were filming. It was really remote.

“The temperatures drop dramatically at night. It is extreme.”

But Gemma, who said Nepal was among the most beautiful places she’d ever been to, added: “We were so lucky to go, given we have been stuck in for most of the year.”
