Geminid meteor shower: Best time to watch shooting stars spectacle in Edinburgh this weekend

A spectacular shooting star display is expected to be visible over Edinburgh this weekend.

The Geminid meteor shower is likely to be at its most striking late on Sunday night into Monday morning. The night-sky spectacular will see 70 meteors fly through the sky each hour.

The display, regarded as one of the most impressive of the year, happens when the Earth passes through a cloud of cometary dust, the Daily Record reports.

Geminids are unusual as they are often multi-coloured, with different shades caused by the presence of metals such as sodium and calcium.

As always, the best views will be seen away from the bright city lights, and according to the Met Office there is a chance of some cloud in the capital tomorrow night – so we might need a bit of luck.

Forecasters do, however, say there might be a slight break in those clouds around 10pm though, and that's when we're best looking skyward.

If you miss out on the chance to catch the spectacular sight tomorrow night, all is not lost. The shooting stars will continue to be visible until December 17.
