Gelli community recycling centre's future considered after break-ins and vandalism

The future of a community recycling centre in the Rhondda which has been broken into and vandalised is being considered.

The council wants to hear residents’ views on what should happen to Gelli Community Recycling Centre (CRC).

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has opened a consultation into the future of the CRC in Nant-Y-Gwyddon-Road.

There have been a high number of break-ins at the centre and it has been the target of vandalism which has reduced the services available and made it less cost effective than other sites, the council says.

The council says  it can’t provide the same service as the other six CRCS in Rhondda Cynon Taf due to the size of the centre, limited access, and poor parking arrangements with neighbouring CRCs three miles away in Treherbert and eight miles away in Dinas.

The council points out how both have recently been upgraded and offer a wide range of recycling and reuse facilities including the recently opened re-use shop at Treherbert.

But Gelli CRC is unable to be extended due to the topography of the surrounding land.

RCT says it currently offers its residents more CRCs than any other council in Wales which are accessible for recycling facilities seven days a week, including bank holidays.

A four-week consultation will began this week on Monday, July 8, and will end on August 5 to discuss whether Gelli CRC is still fit for purpose and financially viable.

To respond to the consultation email  consultation@rctcbc.gov.uk  or write to FREEPOST, RSBU-HJUK-LSSS, Research & Consultation, The Pavilions, Clydach Vale, CF40 2XX.
