Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon reunite 30 years on from Thelma & Louise

It's been 30 years since Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon starred as Thelma & Louise in the iconic film.

But looking at its leading ladies today, you never would have guessed it’s been three decades since they drove through the Grand Canyon in their blue 1966 Ford Thunderbird.

Oscar winners Geena, 65, and Susan, 74, looked incredible as they attended a special drive-in charity screening of the film to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Perched on the bonnet of a similar version of the classic car for the screening of the 1991 film, the pair wore matching black T-shirts, with Susan in ‘She’s my Thelma & I’m her Louise’ and Geena donning ‘She’s my Louise & I’m her Thelma’.

In a nod to the closing scene of the film, the pair locked lips as they posed for cameras at the outdoor drive-in event at the Greek Theater in Griffith Park, in Los Angeles, California.

They also posed for a selfie just like the snap taken in the film with a classic Polaroid instant camera, which appeared on the famous movie posters.

The Ridley Scott film, which also starred Brad Pitt in a role that catapulted him to Hollywood mega-stardom, won competing Best Actress Oscar nominations for its two leading stars.

Screenwriter Callie Khouri, who won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the movie back in 1992, also attended the special event.

Often celebrated as a feminist milestone for empowering women with its rule-breaking, all-action female lead roles often reserved for men, the film sees Geena play ditzy housewife Thelma Dickinson.

She is married to a bullying, controlling husband, with Susan as her best friend Louise Sawyer, a strong and sharp-tongued waitress.

The two escape their humdrum lives in Arkansas and head off in Louise’s convertible for a two-day road trip in the mountains that quickly turns into a nightmare.

In addition to a rare double nomination for Best Actress, the film received six Academy Award nominations and was a huge critical and commercial success.

A portion of the proceeds from Friday’s anniversary event, hosted by Cinespia and MGM, went to The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and LA Regional Food Bank.

In a Q&A before the screening, Geena said: “What was so striking was the intense reaction to the film. Thelma and Louise end up driving off a cliff, and still viewers felt exhilarated by their story.

“It made me realise how few opportunities we give women to come out of a movie feeling inspired and empowered by the female characters. It changed everything about how I chose roles moving forward.”
