Gedson Fernandes provides snapshot of what Jose Mourinho desperately requires in Spurs' midfield

Gedson Fernandes made his Tottenham debut on Saturday lunchtime in the 0-0 draw against Watford.

Following Jose Mourinho's issues in midfield and the recent injuries to Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele, the Lilywhites made a move in the transfer market to bring in the Portuguese player.

Signing on a 18-month loan deal from Benfica, the club have the option to make his move permanent at the end of next season if he does impress during his time in north London.

Needing to win in order to close the gap on Chelsea in the top-four race, Mourinho named the new signing in his squad for the game at Vicarage Road.

However, he had to wait until ten minutes from time to get his chance on the pitch as he replaced Giovani Lo Celso as Spurs pushed on to find a late winner.

Here's how the midfielder got on in his short time on the pitch.

80-90 minutes

Lining up alongside Harry Winks in midfield, Gedson's first involvement in the game was to link up with Serge Aurier as the team attacked down the right

Getting on the end of the Ivorian's pass, the 21-year-old couldn't pick out anyone in the box as his low cross was blocked by the Watford defence.

He then showed his attacking instinct moments later as he latched onto a brilliant through ball from Lucas Moura to find himself in space in the area.

Rather than shooting first time as he was in a good position to get his shot away at Ben Foster, he elected to take a touch and play the ball across the face of goal only for it to be cleared away from danger.

His defensive qualities were also there for all to see in the final few minutes as he did well up against Gerard Deulofeu late on to stop the speedster getting beyond him to mount a late attack.

Verdict

The youngster was only on the pitch for just over ten minutes but he did make a good impression on his debut.

Showing that he can keep the ball ticking over and moving forward, the fact he also made a positive run through the Watford defence shortly after his introduction is good for Spurs as they have been lacking that this season from their midfielders.

As is the case with all foreign signings arriving in the Premier League, it is going to take time for Fernandes to settle in and find his best form.

The fact he can speak English fluently and his family live in the capital is a big bonus, thus meaning that he may hit the ground running a lot sooner than some other signings have in the past.

The Lilywhites need new players to freshen things up and hopefully we will see a lot more of the Portuguese player starting on Wednesday night against Norwich City.
