Gedling residents describe police descending on 'quiet' pub after midnight stabbing

Residents in Gedling have reacted in shock after police descended onto a "quiet" pub at midnight after a stabbing outside.

Officers taped off The Phoenix pub, in Shelford Road, in the early hours of Saturday morning on May 4, after receiving a call at 12.30am.

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed two men were taken to hospital with stab wounds to their legs and a woman has received hospital treatment for head injuries.

Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Residents who lived in the area said they rarely use the pub and were angered, while describing the scene from the night.

Yvonne Gardener, 63, of Shelford Road, said: “You can see glass all over the floor, it’s shocking. What a waste of time for people to be fighting like that and ending up in hospital.

"It’s just a quiet Saturday day, there shouldn’t be a big cordon around here, its worrying for people. I live further away from the pub and was asleep so didn’t hear anything but waking up to it is awful.”

Alan Tymon, 67, has lived in the area for 40 years and told Nottinghamshire Live: “I never drink in there. It was shocking to see the flashing lights. People were fighting and shouting. I’m not normally up that late but I had been watching a movie and heard all the shouting.

"People and knives will never mix. It’s shocking behaviour. It is very rare to hear about things like this here.

"The pub is usually very quiet. It’s quite an older population around here who stay in and don’t want any of this near them, myself included.”

Sarah Jones, 31, a carer of Gedling, was walking her dog past the scene. She said: “I’m getting to the point where I’m not even shocked by these sort of things anymore. you seem to hear about them all the time.

"It’s a sad thing to say really. I feel for the residents around here who have to deal with seeing or hearing that last night. My thoughts are with the victims.”

A woman, who lives close to the pub but did not want to be named, told Nottinghamshire Live: “We saw people arguing outside the pub at about midnight. There was a group of about four of them threatening to use a knife.

"That’s when we thought we should call the police. There was one girl throwing glass bottles. This is the first time something like this has happened at the pub.”

Police are now appealing for the public's help and have said the offender is believed to be a man of mixed race and he was wearing dark clothing.

If you have any information on this incident, contact police on 101 quoting incident number 18 of May 4 2019. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
