Gedling Borough Council could remove bench that is 'being used inappropriately'

A council has said a bench could be removed in attempts to reduce anti-social behaviour.

Gedling Borough Council responded to claims from some residents in Carlton that a bench on the corner of Deep Furrow Avenue and Foxhill Road had become a target for negative behaviour.

The council said it can remove the bench "if it is clear that it is no longer benefitting the residents".

It comes after a teenager aged 17 was hospitalised after being stabbed near the area on Sunday evening (August 23).

A resident who wished to be known as Mr King, previously said: "It doesn't worry me too much, it is a quiet neighbourhood usually.

"But the bench on the corner, you may not always see people there, but there is often beer cans or food leftovers around it so I think it must attract people who go to drink there."

A couple who wished to remain anonymous added that people "congregate" at the bench.

Portfolio Holder for Communities, Councillor Gary Gregory said: “We take any issue with anti-social behaviour in our borough very seriously and we work closely with the police to look at ways of reducing it.

"We are responsible for street furniture management and we can remove a bench if it is clear that it is no longer benefitting the residents and is being used inappropriately."
