Gearoid Hegarty says it would be 'seriously wrong' to prioritise inter-county stars for vaccinations

Gearoid Hegarty feels it would be "seriously wrong" if inter-county players were prioritised for Covid-19 vaccinations ahead of the elderly.

It has been suggested in some quarters that elite GAA stars could be bumped up in the queue for the jabs given the entertainment they provide for supporters.

“I don’t think that will happen to be honest," said the Limerick hurling ace.

“My mother’s mother and father and elderly, living above in Kilcormac in Offaly, my nana and grandad, and they are still waiting on the vaccine.

“So, if I was to think I am getting a vaccine before them, there would be something seriously wrong.

"Look, in an ideal world it would be great if we could get the vaccine, but it’s a supply issue.

“There just isn’t enough of it there. I think it should be given to the people that need it more first, and that’s elderly people and that is people working on the frontline, doctors and nurses, that’s my opinion.”

The Limerick ace is a teacher who hates being out of the classroom but understands the government's decision to keep schoolchildren at home.

"A teacher’s job is so different teaching at home than being inside the classroom," said Hegarty. "I’d love to be in school but at the moment it’s not safe, the cases are just crazy.

"I don’t watch the news and I don’t watch case numbers but I obviously have a fair idea how it’s going because that’s all that’s on in my house at night-time, and hopefully over the next couple of weeks it will calm down.

"You can only do the best you can. I still hold Zooms with my different classes a couple of times a day, they’re not great to turn on the cameras – some might turn on their mics and throw in a few words here and there. It’s very different."

But he is proud of the way GAA club teams and intercounty teams have conducted themselves since the GAA got back underway last August.

“The amount of selfless work that goes on in all club and inter-county teams has been unbelievable. That’s why there haven't been many cases linked to it".
