GCSE students across Liverpool celebrate as results roll in

Students across Liverpool celebrated their GCSE results this morning as results came in across the UK.

GCSE results nationwide have followed the trend set by A Levels earlier in the week, hitting their highest levels ever.

That comes after the second year that teacher assessments were used to determine students grades following the huge disruption wrought on schools and exams by the pandemic.

Many pupils and teachers in Liverpool were able to celebrate excellent grades after an extremely difficult year.

They included students at Cardinal Heenan Catholic High School like Daniel McAvoy.

Sixteen-year-old Daniel said he was ‘made up’ with his results after doing better than he thought he would.

He said: “It’s been stressful sitting in your room for six hours a day doing online lessons, but when you see what you got, it pays off.”

St Nicholas’ Academy in Garston was one school which reported an improvement in the percentage of students obtaining higher grades (7 to 9) ,with increases in English language, mathematics, biology, chemistry, computer science and history.

Headteachers across the city congratulated pupils on their achievements after two academic years which have been badly affected by Covid-19.

As well as the interruption to their education, many pupils have been cut off from their peers socially and missed out on their end of term celebrations towards the end of this year due to surging cases.

Michael Sutton, headteacher at King David High School, said students had been “justly rewarded with excellent results.

More than 30% of students gained at least seven grades at 7 and above.

Top performers included included Eleanor Barton-Cooke, who achieved nine grade 9s and an 8, Felicity Wilson-Scott with nine grade 9s a 7 and Ruby Hollett, who achieved nine grade 9s.

Mr Sutton said: “During the last two, extremely challenging, years we have seen these students rise to the challenge and work diligently and flexibly to ensure that they still excel.

“I would like to thank the staff for all their efforts and look forward to welcoming so many of our students back into our Sixth Form alongside those who are joining us for the first time.

“There are some wonderful performances throughout our student body.”
