GCSE results in your area: See which parts of the UK performed best and worst

Hundreds of thousands of youngsters around the UK have received their GCSE results after sitting the Government's tough new courses - but how has your region performed?

Northern Ireland has scored the highest percentage of entries who achieved a 'pass,' with 82.2% getting a C or 4 depending on the grading system.

The region was also top area for the people getting grades A or 7 and above.

London came in second, with 70.6% passing and 25.7% scoring at least an A or 7.

The lowest percentage for students hitting the pass mark was Wales, with 62.8% given grades C or 4 and above.

North-east England recorded the lowest percentage - with 16.4% - for students getting at least an A or 7.

More than one in five (20.8%) UK GCSE entries scored one of the three top grades this year, up from 20.5% last summer.

The proportion receiving the top grades - at least a 7 or an A grade - is the highest since 2015 and marks the second year-on-year rise in a row.

The proportion of entries getting at least a 4 or a C grade is also the highest since 2015.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said today was a "proud and exciting day."

He said: "Today is a proud day for students, teachers and parents up and down the country, and I wish them all the very best for their results.

"It should also be an exciting day. It's a day that marks the culmination of years of hard work and opens doors that can create life-changing opportunities."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson added: "Nothing beats hard work and effort - and the greatest reward is knowing that you've done your best."

Here is the GCSE pass rate - entries awarded grades C/4 and above - broken down by nation and by region.

The figure in brackets is the change in percentage points on 2018.

England 67.1% (up 0.5)

Wales 62.8% (up 1.2)

Northern Ireland 82.2% (up 1.1)

North-east England 63.8% (down 0.7)

North-west England 64.9% (up 0.3)

Yorkshire & Humber 64.1% (up 0.5)

West Midlands 63.8% (up 0.7)

East Midlands 65.8% (up 0.7)

Eastern England 67.1% (no change)

South-west England 68.3% (up 0.5)

South-east England 70.2% (up 0.6)

London 70.6% (up 0.4)
