
Gavin Williamson has "done his best in very difficult circumstances", the Health Secretary has said amid ongoing criticism over the handling of A-level grades.
Speaking to the BBC, Matt Hancock defended the Education Secretary and said that calls for him to resign are a distraction when he is focused on getting children back to school next month.
Mr Williamson is under intense pressure after he was forced to abandon the algorithm-based system for awarding A-level and GCSE grades in England.
GCSE students will receive their grades on Thursday. The Government announced that students in England could opt for grades based on their teachers’ estimates – if they were higher than the moderated grades they received.
