GCSE results 2019: All the subjects getting new 9-1 grades this year

GCSE grades are changing, and the vast majority of subjects are now graded 9-1 instead of A*-G.

In a system designed to "better differentiate between the highest performing students", only a limited number of Grade 9s (replacing the very highest A* scores) can be awarded.

A Grade 7 has replaced the traditional Grade A, a Grade 4 is a "standard pass" and a Grade 5 is a "strong pass".

While the new grading system was only introduced to three subjects in 2017 (English Literature, English Language and Maths), it rolled out to more than 20 others last year.

And this year another wave of GCSE subjects has been added:

Film Studies

Media Studies

Modern Foreign Languages (Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek, Modern Hebrew, Panjabi, Polish, Russian, Urdu)

Psychology

Sociology

Statistics

While the majority of GCSE subjects are now graded 9-1, there's still a fourth wave to come.

In 2020, Biblical Hebrew and another set of Modern Foreign Languages (Gujarati, Persian, Portuguese and Turkish) will be moved over to the new grading system.

In 2018, Ancient Languages (Classical Greek and Latin), Art and Design, Biology, Chemistry, Citizenship Studies, Combined Science (double award), Computer Science, Dance, Drama, Food Preparation and Nutrition, Geography, History, Modern Foreign Languages (French, German, Spanish), Music, Physics, Physical Education and Religious Studies all started on the 9-1 grades.

GCSE Results Day is Thursday 22 August
