GCC Urges Yemenis to Prioritize National Interests, Unite Ranks

A general view of Aden, Yemen. (AFP)

The Gulf Cooperation Council stressed on Monday the importance of responding to the Saudi-led Arab coalition’s call for the need to return Yemen back to the way it was before the Southern Transitional Council declared over the weekend a state of emergency and self-rule in the south.

GCC Secretary General Dr. Nayef al-Hajraf underlined the need to annul any move that violates the Riyadh Agreement and instead speed up efforts to implement the pact, which will unite Yemeni ranks, restore state institutions and thwart terrorism.

He hoped that ongoing efforts would help “thwart any escalatory acts” and calm the situation in order to complete the implementation of the Riyadh Agreement “without delay”.

This entails forming a government that would assume its duties in the interim capital, Aden, and provide services to the Yemeni people, he added.

This need has become more pressing given the economic and development challenges, the recent flooding in Aden and the potential outbreak of the novel coronavirus, he warned.

Hajraf urged the Yemeni parties to prioritize state interests and the Yemeni people and unite ranks to achieve higher goals, which are restoring the state through the political solution according to the Gulf initiative, national dialogue outcomes and relevant United Nations Security Council resolution.
