Gazza now in 'great place' after years of battling booze says pal Ally McCoist

Ally McCoist has revealed Paul Gascoigne is now in a “great place” after years of battling the booze.

The Rangers legends have teamed up for a radio show ahead of the Euro 2020 Championships.

McCoist admitted he had worried for his friend when he went into rehab.

However, he was delighted at seeing Gazza in fine form when he interviewed him on Talksport.

The England great had recently appeared on the Italian version of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in Honduras, Central America.

McCoist, 58, said: “It’s the best I have seen him and the best I have heard him in years. When I got him he was self-isolating in a hotel in Milan.

“I got him on the Zoom and I was chuffed to bits because he looked brilliant and he sounded brilliant.”

Gazza, 54, even joked about rehab and how old team-mate Gareth Southgate got the England job despite missing a penalty at Euro 1996.

He said: “I don’t get this, Coisty, I need the country to help me here.

“I scored my penalty and Gareth Southgate missed his. I’ve ended up in rehab and he’s ended up the manager of England and done a £20,000 pizza advert. What did I do wrong?

“I told Gareth that and he just laughed.”

Gascoigne was forced to quit the Italian reality show after dislocating his shoulder but described it as a “great experience” and he now wants to take part in the UK version.

McCoist’s interview with Gascoigne is on Talksport at 7pm on Tuesday.
