Gaza hospitals struggle to treat those injured by Israeli troops

Gaza hospitals struggle to treat those injured by Israeli troops

Another Palestinian man has died of gunshot wounds sustained during protests in the Gaza Strip, a spokesman for the Health Ministry said Monday.

Faris al-Regeb, 29, was shot in the abdomen during mass protests along the Gaza border on Friday, bringing the death toll to 18.

Hospitals in Gaza are struggling to cope with the influx of Palestinians injured by Israeli snipers along the Gaza border with Israel, Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid said from Gaza.

Doctors say they are running out of medicine and supplies to treat patients, many of whom were wounded by live ammunition, she added.

No cooperation

The Israeli use of deadly force has drawn international outcry, the United Nations and right's groups have called for an independent investigation into the killings.

But the Israeli minister for security has said "there is no reason" for Israel to cooperate with an UN inquiry into army actions.

Multiple videos appear to show Palestinians being shot while not posing an immediate threat.

Hundreds of others were injured by Israeli live fire, according to a Gaza Health Ministry spokesperson.

Friday's Great March of Return kicked off a six-week long protest for the right of return of Palestinian refugees to their homes in what is now Israel.

The protest is due to end on May 15, the day Palestinians call the Nakba or Catastrophe, marking the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the conflict surrounding the creation of Israel in 1948.
