Gayle King's Princess Anne comments spark sexism row over Prince Philip's funeral question

American TV presenter Gayle King has been accused of sexism for questioning why Princess Anne was in the ceremonial royal procession at Prince Philip's funeral.

She led the coverage of Saturday's royal funeral for the American network CBS.

King has angered royalists by asking Vanity Fair editor Tina Brown why the Princess Royal was the only woman walking behind the Duke of Edinburgh's casket, Bristol Live reports.

Anne was the only female member of the Royal Family walking behind the custom Defender Land Rover that was carrying Prince Philip's body on the final journey to St. George's chapel.

Traditionally, men follow the casket during royal funeral processions, but Princess Anne walked behind at her grandmother, the Queen Mother's funeral in 2002.

And on Saturday the Princess Royal, who is 15th in line to the throne, led the procession with her older brother Charles, followed by Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

One irked royal watcher tweeted: "Gayle asked Tina Brown why Anne was in the funeral procession with the men? Uh, Princess Anne is Prince Philip's only daughter!"

Another wrote: "I don't see why she was surprised. Princess Anne even walked for the Queen Mother funeral procession.

"And I find it disrespectful of her to even question. Princess Anne was his only daughter. Of course she was going to do that."

Another stormed: "If I were Princess Anne, I would sue Gayle King for being a sexist."

Others questioned why Zara Tindall, Princess Eugenie and the Princess Beatrice were not walking behind the casket with Prince William and Prince Harry.

"If you notice, though, Prince Philip has many granddaughters, and only the males walked behind the casket.," tweeted one viewer watching the American coverage.

"Weird tradition".
