Gaya woman killed for dowry, mom lights pyre

Gaya: In a rare instance in Bihar, a grieving woman lit the funeral pyre of her daughter, who was allegedly killed by her husband and in-laws for dowry. The victim's mother Savitri Devi, who lives in Delhi, reached Gaya after getting information about the death of her daughter, Sapna, and performed the last rites at Vishnupad crematorium in Gaya late on Friday as the victim's daughter is only 3-year-old.

A gang of criminals looted Rs. 3.80 lakh in cash from a Gramin Bank branch near Bettiah bus stand in West Champaran district around 11.30am on Saturday. Bank manager Insan Singh said the criminals held the employees and customers hostage at gunpoint while committing the crime. Bettiah SDPO Mukul Parimal Pandey said police have begun an investigation.

The victim's mother Savitri Devi, who lives in Delhi, reached Gaya after getting information about the death of her daughter, Sapna, and performed the last rites at Vishnupad crematorium here late Friday night as the victim's daughter is only 3-year-old.

According to police, Sapna's husband Hemant Chaudhary alias Dabbu Chaudhary of Chand Chauraha locality under Vishnupad police station area was arrested on the basis of Savitri's complaint alleging that her daughter had been killed for dowry.

Savitri has also named Hemant's parents as accused in the case.

Locals said Sapna was married to Hemant around six years ago, but did not have a cordial relationship.
