Gay penguin couple who have been together for five years raise chick together after adopting an egg

A pair of female penguins are raising a chick at a London aquarium after adopting an egg.

The Gentoo couple, who have been together for five years and are called Marama and Rocky, built a nest for the new arrival.

They now take turns on feeding shifts after staff saw its birth mother was unable to cope with raising two chicks.

The fluffy youngster, which is yet to be named, was born two weeks ago weighing 82g and is the second penguin birth this year at Sea Life London on the South Bank.

Gentoo penguins are native to the Falkland Islands and have near-threatened status in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s list of threatened species.

Penguins are said to mate for life, and same-sex pairings have been observed both in the wild and in captivity
