A Championship footballer has confirmed the date he will publicly come out as gay, with an announcement due this coming week.
The footballer, who says he plays in the second tier, has previously spoken about holding talks with his club as he planned to publicly reveal his identity ahead of the new season.
And posting from The Gay Footballer Twitter account on Sunday, the sportsman simply shared the date '24.07.19' - meaning we can expect an announcement on Wednesday.
There are currently no active professional male footballers in England who are openly gay.
Speaking earlier this month after outlining his plans, the footballer released a statement thanking his club and those who had offered their support.
He said: "The club have instinctively viewed the issue in human terms, their support has focused on that first and foremost.
"Any pre-existing concerns I had in this regard have been alleviated as a result of the support that has been evident.
"Further, within the context of football it was reassuring for them to be fully aware that performance and consistency is based around individuals that are at peace with themselves and the decision to be open is instrumental in ensuring I can be myself.
"Also, I want to reinforce the gratitude I have to my family - their love and support has been consistent throughout my life but has been all the more visible, and needed, over recent days.
"I would also like to thank those who have offered support across social and mainstream media."
