Gay couple 'have coffee thrown over them on Tube' in homophobic attack after asking woman to move bag

A gay couple had hot coffee thrown over them by a woman in a homophobic attack after they asked her to move her bag from a seat, police said.

Two men who had boarded a Hammersmith and City line train at Plaistow during rush hour asked a woman if she could move her bag from a seat so they could sit down, according to British Transport Police.

However, the woman began shouting homophobic abuse in response, the force said.

She then threw a cup of coffee at the victims and before hitting one of the men in the face repeatedly, according to police.

One of the men was left with swelling to his lip and minor injuries to his arm after the attack at 7.25am on August 9.

The woman left the Tube train at Bromley-by-Bow station.

Police have now released a picture of a woman who they want to speak in connection with the investigation.
