Gay Byrne’s wife Kathleen Watkins has given an update on the health of the RTE legend, as he is currently battles prostate cancer.
Watkins, who has been married to Byrne for over 55 years, has admitted he has had a rough few months.
It comes after he was forced to step down from his role on the RTE Lyric FM show in 2016, after the cancer was found.
She told The Ray D’Arcy Show that despite his ill health, he still has some positive moments.

She said: "He’s been up and down a bit lately, but he wasn’t too down to pick up [my new book]"
"Treatment is ongoing but we’re doing our thing.
"We have two fabulous daughters who are really scaffolding around us and that’s a great help.
She also went on to say that she doubts the iconic broadcaster will ever return to our screens.
She added: "I can’t see it happening no.

"Not at the moment. Certainly not. He’s 85 and the treatment has really taken its toll in the last year or so.
"But like everybody else we solider on.
"We’ve met the most amazing people in the Mater Hospital, not only the wonderful team and the wonderful nursing staff but other patients who are all there with the same illness".
