Gay bar WOW to move to site of former Buffalo Bar in Cardiff city centre

Popular gay bar WOW is to move to the site of the former Buffalo bar in Cardiff city centre.

WOW, which was formerly situated in its long-running home on Churchill Way, shut its doors last month, with a post on its Facebook page that it was closing "for a nip and tuck" but would "reopen as an exciting new LGBTQ venue".

The bar recently teased on its Instagram account that 'something new is on its way', before announcing on Instagram last night it was to reopen in Buffalo bar's former home.

Announcing the move, WOW posted:  "We are very pleased & excited to announce that out new venue will be within the former Buffalo Bar. We need to carry out extensive refurbishment work, once the landlords have completed works they are required to do under our agreement."

The announcement by the gay bar comes after the boss of the bar was fined £2,000 last month after the council received repeated complaints about "loud music and singing" late at night and in the early hours of the morning.

WOW Bar licensee Victoria Roffi, 57, failed to attend Cardiff Magistrates' Court where she was charged with two counts of breaching a noise abatement notice served on the venue.

A Cardiff council spokesman said "a significant number of complaints were made about loud amplified music and singing late at night at the venue and into the early hours of the morning".

She was fined a total of £2,000 after the charges, relating to October 21 and November 4 last year, were found proven in her absence.

Following the case a council spokesman said there had been "numerous complaints" about WOW Bar dating back to July last year.

Now WOW has announced its intention to move to the former music venue on Windsor Place which has laid empty since Buffalo shut its doors in January this year.

Then the owners of the bar and live music venue cited a "massive increase" in business rates, coupled with rent increases and a change in consumer spending habits as among the reasons for the closure.

The closure came just a month after grassroots music venue Gwdihw, on Guildford Crescent, announced it would be closing after its landlord decided not to renew the lease.

Buffalo, which opened in 2005, saw the likes of Adele, Stormzy, Disclosure and James Blake perform there when they were rising stars.

Martin Jones, from WOW, described the move as exciting.

He said:"The new venture will be headed by myself and two senior management staff - where we will keep a similar concept to the old venue as well as adding something new.

"The former Buffalo Bar, on windsor place, is more than three times the size of the old venue with a lovely beer garden.

"In the coming months we will also convert part of the roof into the only roof top garden in Cardiff city centre."

An exact opening date has yet to be confirmed but it is hoped the new venue will open by the middle of July.
