Gavrilova to have achilles tendon surgery

Daria Gavrilova will go under the knife to try to beat a chronic foot injury. (AAP)

Australian tennis star Daria Gavrilova is going under the knife to hopefully put more than five years of injury hell behind her.

Gavrilova will undergo surgery on Friday after a chronic foot injury sent her spiralling from No.20 in the world to her current position of 387th in the rankings.

"So tomorrow I'm having a surgery on my achilles," the 26-year-old posted on Twitter.

"My Haglunds bump is going to be shaved and tendon cleaned up.

"I honestly cannot wait and I'm happy that this is happening.

"I've had this injury since 2016 and non surgical treatments just never worked and I've had enough pushing."

The former Aussie No.1 needed a wildcard to gain entry into the Australian Open and lost last week in the second round to compatriot and current world No.1 Ash Barty.
