Gavin & Stacey wins special NTA award after huge success of Christmas special

The audience and viewers at home were left stunned on Tuesday night when Gavin & Stacey won an award at the NTAs despite not even being nominated!

Gavin & Stacey's Christmas Special was the most watched TV show of last year, attracting some 18.5 million viewers to BBC1 on Christmas Day, well ahead of any other show on TV on December 25.

And, while it just missed the cut to be eligible for the National Television Award shortlist this year, the much loved comedy did take home a trophy on the night,  being presented the Landmark award by The Voice coaches Olly Murs and Tom Jones.

After saying to Olly, "oi...what's o-Murr-in'?" show writer Ruth Jones accepted the award, with co-star and co-writer James Corden busy with work in America.

In her speech, she paid tribute to her co-stars, with the likes of Joanna Page, Larry Lamb and Rob Brydon in attendance, the show's director who has been with Gavin & Stacey since day one and the people of Barry Island, where most of the show is set.

Unfortunately, the news viewers were hoping for, about a new series didn't come, but Ruth did thank all the fans at home, joking "all 18 and a half million of you."
