Gavin & Stacey fans fuming at Ruth Jones after worrying announcement at NTAs

Gavin & Stacey fans were left fuming at Ruth Jones after her worrying announcement at the National Television Awards.

The show's creator got up on stage with the rest of the cast and crew to collect the Impact Award during the star-studded ceremony.

Ruth started her acceptance speech with an "alright" in character as Nessa, before asking Olly Murs: "Oh Olly, what's o-murring?"

Turning to Tom Jones, she added: "I don’t know what you’re laughing at Tom. You never write, you never phone. There's still a lot of electricity between me and Sir Tom and don't you knows it."

Excited Gavin & Stacey fans were eagerly anticipating some exciting news - and were convinced Ruth would confirm a fourth series of the hit sitcom.

But they were left bitterly disappointed when Ruth failed to mention if the show was returning.

Ruth said: "Thank you so much for this. It is lush and it is tidy and James Corden is so sad he can’t be here tonight.

"I’m really sad too because he and I have been on a journey lasting over 15 years with Gavin & Stacey and I wish he was here tonight to see this.

"James I'm sure you're watching in the States. Lovely, isn't it?"

Ruth then thanked all of the people who work on the show behind-the-scenes and the BBC for having faith in a Christmas special.

She continued: "James and I write the words but this tremendous cast bring the words to life. Their talent amazes us and we're so happy they agreed to come back after 10 years."

In an awkward moment, music then started playing as awards bosses tried to get Ruth to end her speech.

But the defiant actress ignored the music and carried on with her acceptance speech.

She added: "I know you want me to go but I have to thank the people of Barry Island for giving us such a warm welcome this summer.

"And finally to the viewers, the fans. Without you we wouldn’t be here tonight."

There was plenty of festive cheer in the recent episode, after viewers waited nearly 10 years for the comeback (BBC)

Gavin & Stacey fans took to Twitter to reveal their disappointment.

One viewer said: "Here is me feeling like an absolutely p**t thinking Ruth Jones was going to drop the “Series 4” bomb at the end of that speech.."

"I was waiting to hear “Season 4 is coming soon” you have broken ma heart," added another.

A third said: "Gavin n Stacy no announcement of series four.....oh well best have a gin"

*The National Television Awards air tonight on ITV at 7.30pm
