Gavin & Stacey fans are only just realising where they've seen Smithy's mum before

Last Christmas, Nessa gave Smithy her heart - and we never got to see what happened next.

After 10 years off the air, Gavin & Stacey fans were treated to a Christmas special in 2019 to find the eponymous couple a decade on with three children, and Bryn feeling stressed over having the responsibility of cooking Christmas dinner for more than 13 people.

The special ended with Nessa getting down on one knee, with the credits rolling before we got an answer, and viewers were again left hanging this year with no sign of a follow-up episode.

But fans of the show written by Ruth Jones and James Corden still found time to rewatch the classic series - and some are only just realising they have seen Smithy's mum before in a huge blockbuster hit.

She also played Miss Trunchbull in the 1996 classic Matilda (TriStar Pictures)

The grumpy character of Cath Smith appears in just two episodes and is played by the brilliant Pam Ferris, with some fans only now putting two and two together that she also played the iconic character of Miss Trunchbull in Matilda.

They took to social media to express their shock that the casting had passed them by for so many years, as one said: "Just seen on TikTok that Smithy's mum in Gavin and Stacey also played Miss Trunchbull in Matilda?!?! I'm literally SHOOK."

A second wrote wrote: "The fact that the same actress plays both Miss Trunchbull in Matilda and Smithy’s mum in Gavin & Stacey will forever blow my mind."

And another added: "It still blows my mind that Miss Trunchball from Matilda, Smithy’s Mum from Gavin & Stacey and Vernon Dursley’s sister from Harry Potter (the aunt he blew up) are all the same person."

As well as playing Aunt Marge in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Pam Ferris' impressive CV includes credits on Children of Men, Christmas films Nativity! and Saving Santa, Luther, and more recently Call the Midwife.

Had you already made the connection or is it completely blowing your mind too? Let us know in the comments.
