Gavin & Stacey cast had rocks thrown at them by kids as they filmed the first ever series

Everyone loves Gavin & Stacey and the cast was welcomed back to Barry with open arms when filming the 2019 Christmas special earlier this year.

But the welcome wasn't always so warm, as revealed by star Larry Lamb - especially before the popular series had ever aired.

Lamb, who plays Mick Shipman in the show, talked about his first experiences of Barry during a Q&A with the cast to promote the forthcoming festive episode.

"The first time we ever filmed in Barry, we were doing a travelling shot and there were kids throwing rocks at us!" said the actor who was emotional about the team getting back together after a 10-year break.

As the show became more and more popular the reception became much, much warmer.

When they arrived in Barry this summer to shoot the festive special, they were mobbed by fans who wanted to catch a glimpse of the stars of the series, which has amassed awards and critical acclaim.

"This time we were so inundated with people, there were 300/400 people at each end of Trinity Street. What it’s done for them...and they really appreciate it, they love it, no pretence," he said.

"They feel a part of it. It’s been good for everybody."

Talking about the new episode the actor became emotional, saying:  "(Now) I’ve seen it I feel so extraordinarily overcome with emotion frankly. It all sounds too cliched.

"You turn up on the first day of rehearsal and you’re very scared about doing it again but then you watch the whole thing and all the bits you didn’t see being shot and you realise this is every bit as good as you dreamt it might be and probably a bit better."

The Christmas special of Gavin & Stacey will air on Christmas Day.
