Gavin Roberton's Aunt reveals relief as nephew returns home from three weeks in Ibiza hospital

After a long, gruelling three weeks Gavin Roberton has finally returned to Scotland.

The Stewarton man, 26, was attacked while on holiday with mates in Ibiza and he was in a medically-induced coma for over three weeks.

His mum Kirsty and aunt Paula flew out to the White Isle as soon as they heard about the news to be by his side.

He still has a long road of recovery ahead of him but he is now no longer reliant on intensive care which means he can now work on recovering.

Paula said she was getting ready to go to her work at Ayrshire College when she got a phone call about Gavin.

Speaking to the Standard, she said: “It has been a very difficult few weeks. It is good to be home finally.

“We got the news on Saturday that he’d be coming home but it took a while for us to get the clearance.

“To be cleared to come home he had to be breathing on his own for five days so they left it until the last kick to tell us if it was okay for him to return. It all went so fast after that.

“They gave us clearance late on Saturday night and he was flying home with Kirsty at 11am on the Sunday.”

Paula said when she got the original phone call she had no idea what she was heading out to.

She said: “I was up and ready for work then I got told about it so I went out as soon as I could with Kirsty.

“The hospital were very vague on the phone and we had to have our phones off on the flight so we had no idea how he was. We were thinking the worst.”

Paula thanked everyone who has chipped in with a number of fundraising drives.

She said: “It’s overwhelming to see how much was raised. It shows how well liked he is.

“If it wasn’t for the fundraising we don’t know what we would have done to cover the costs in getting him home.”
