Gavin Rae reveals incredible Rangers Christmas night out that ended with Ibrox stars FLYING a plane

We all know a footballer's night out can differ a bit from your average Saturday night with your pals.

The money on offer, plus the fact they don't get that many, means they can afford to splash out and be a bit more eccentric in what they do.

It's very rare though that you get hungover footballers flying themselves back from their Christmas party because the pilots are struggling just as much after their evening.

But that's exactly what happened during Gavin Rae's time at Rangers when the club headed south to Liverpool because they felt they couldn't have a party in Glasgow.

With so much fan attention in their own city, Rae admits it was a struggle to have a few beers in Glasgow but perhaps he didn't expect how crazy the trip to Liverpool would be.

Speaking on the Under The Cosh podcast, Rae explains exactly what happened during the night out.

Most players who spent three injury hit years at Ibrox might not have many stories, but Rae certainly had a controversial spell at the club having been unfairly stuck in the middle of the Paul Le Guen and Barry Ferguson row.

But it was the night out that was perhaps his craziest story as he revealed Steven Thompson piloted part of the journey home.

He said: "It was very rare you could get a night out and to be fair the boys loved a night out. The boys went out together and we’d have a laugh and that.

"But it just got back to the club so quickly that it wasn’t worth it.

"We had a couple of good Christmas parties, we had an amazing one in Liverpool. We played at Ibrox and we chartered a jet down to Liverpool.

"I’m like ‘Chartering a jet, are you mad?’ It was this tiny little thing. It was like a car with wings but it wasn’t that expensive.

"So we played this game, went to the airport and down to Liverpool on this small chartered jet. Ended up out in Liverpool and we were flying back the next day.

"We were in this nightclub and we spot the captain and the stewards and stewardesses of the plane. They ended up coming out with us and getting absolutely bladdered. We were flying back the next morning, not morning first thing but mid morning.

"So they were out with us all night, steaming. We get up in the hotel, big Thommo (Steven Thompson) has the guitar out and we’re having a good laugh and that. Someone says ‘right boys we need to get to the airport and get back up the road’.

"We get to the airport, they had been out with us and obviously still hungover, the flight back was just mental. Chaos.

"Big Thommo is flying the plane. They’re letting us flying the plane it was nuts. Absolutely nuts.

"Because it was just us on the plane, you’ve got Thommo up the front and he was in control of the plane. Big Bob Malcolm the whole way home just kept shouting the loudest ever ‘AAAAGHHH, WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE’ just for banter. All the way back, it was just chaos.

"The boys just kept on: landed in Glasgow, straight back out and it was crazy."
