Gavin Massey opens up on his Wigan future as Nottingham Forest speculation grows

In-demand Gavin Massey hopes to finalise his future in the coming weeks after playing a pivotal role in preserving Wigan Athletic’s Championship status.

Massey will see his current deal expire at the end of season, and that uncertainty has seen him linked with a move to East Midlands’ rivals Nottingham Forest and Derby County this summer, among others.

Now the Latics' survival is confirmed following a fine run over Easter which saw Paul Cook’s men draw with Premier League-bound Norwich, before beating Leeds and Preston, the 26-year-old hopes to finalise a deal to remain at the DW Stadium beyond the summer.

“Yeah, we are hoping to get something sorted,” Massey told the Wigan Post.

“I know I’ve said this before but I do love being here at this club.

"I’ve built some good friendships up here, I live here now with my missus, and so it would be really ideal for me to stay here.

“Obviously with the situation at the club – and us not knowing if we were coming or going – it wasn’t straight-forward.”

Massey has struggled with injury this season, being limited to just 20 appearances, but has returned in some style, and bagged a brace at Elland Road on Good Friday to help his team beat promotion-chasing Leeds in their own back yard.

Despite links to other clubs in the second tier, Massey’s focus, he says, remains on penning a new deal in Lancashire.

“But now we know our destination is the Championship, hopefully that can get sorted over the next few weeks,” he added.
