Gavin Garraway murder trial: Sixth-former ‘stabbed father in brazen killing’

Victim: Gavin Garraway has been named as the victim of a stabbing in Clapham

A father-of-three was beaten with a crutch before being stabbed to death by a sixth-former on his school lunchbreak, a court heard.

Gavin Garraway, 40, was driving past Clapham Common Underground Station when he was ambushed and set upon through his open window, it is claimed.

Zion Chiata, 19, and Tishaun Panton, 21, from south London, are on trial at the Old Bailey accused of the “brazen” attack in March.

Prosecutor Jonathan Rees QC said Mr Garraway was a “sitting duck” as he was stabbed repeatedly.

Mr Rees said: “This brazen attack was carried out in full view of numerous pedestrians and motorists who were going about their daily business in Clapham.”

Chiata, who was a sixth-form student at the time, allegedly knifed Mr Garraway three times while Panton rammed the crutch through the open car window.

Panton denies murder and manslaughter while Chiata has pleaded not guilty to murder and possession of an offensive weapon but admits manslaughter.

The trial continues.
