Gavin and Stacey star Neil the baby reveals what James Corden said about a new series

The Gavin and Stacey star who plays Neil the baby has revealed what James Corden said to him about the prospect of making a fourth series of the hit BBC sitcom.

Oscar Hartland, 10, who returned to play the same role for the Christmas special, opened up during an interview with Good Morning Britain.

Neil is the son of the show’s 'will they-won’t they' couple Nessa and Smithy, played by the show’s creators Ruth Jones and James Corden.

Oscar explained to hosts Adil Ray, Charlotte Hawkins and stand-in entertainment presenter Myles Stephenson that he’d asked Corden directly about the chance of reprising the show for a proper series.

Oscar said: "I did ask James in the process of filming. He said it's just what the people want.

"Me, I would love it to happen. It really depends what other people think about it and if they like it or not."

Obviously fans did like it - the show smashed viewing figures, attracting more than 11 million viewers and the biggest Christmas TV audience since 2008.

So does this mean that a new series is on the cards?

Admitting he was surprised by the ending, which saw Nessa propose to Smithy, Oscar said: “I didn’t know about that. I was so excited at the time I was like, there has to be a season four and maybe a special."

After hearing about the auditions for the role, Oscar decided to give it a go, but didn’t expect to get it as there were more professional actors who went for it.

He said: "I didn't really get my hopes up as there were other people who did acting. I was in a couple of newspapers because I was in it before and they noticed me.

"I did my audition in Cardiff and a few weeks later I found out I got the job. I was so excited, it was really cool.

"I thought I was getting a different part but no, I actually got Neil. I was really really excited to start filming.”

Oscar then went on to explain that he had to turn down a family holiday to take on the role.

He said: "We were going to Florida. I thought, Gavin and Stacey won't always be there but Florida is.

“It was so fun. That's why I want to do a fourth series."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
