Gavin and Stacey’s Ruth Jones says there's ‘room for more’ of the BBC sitcom after Nessa and Smithy proposal

Ruth Jones has sparked excitement with Gavin and Stacey viewers after hinting that we could find out what happens to Nessa and Smithy following the shock proposal.

If they can find the time to film it, that is.

The Welsh actress, who pens the sitcom with James Corden, has admitted that there is “room for more” of the BBC show following the Christmas Day special.

Viewers were left hanging at the end of the hour-long episode, which saw Jones’ character Nessa propose to Corden’s Smithy.

The on-screen pair have enjoyed a romance in the past and even have a child together - Neil, 11 - but any chance of a reunion between them seemed to be halted after Smithy met girlfriend Sonia.

It didn’t - they ended up in bed together the night before Christmas after one too many bevies, hours before Sonia was due to meet the gang.

Sonia’s very awkward appearance was cut short after she decided she wanted to go to her mum’s - leaving the road clear for Nessa to declare her love for Smithy, before getting down on one knee.

Viewers were devastated at the thought that they might never find out what happens to the couple - but Ruth’s comments have sparked hope of a new series.

Ruth told The Sun : “It is so complicated for me and James to get together to write.

“I do say never say never, as while we did make it work that was after three years of trying to find time when we could sit down and write it.

“Obviously with the way it ends, there is room for more.

“It’s a shame we didn’t have more time when we were writing so we could have written more, then have it all ready to go.

"But it was such a challenge to get that special filmed.”

The Christmas Day special saw the characters 10 years on from the New Year’s Day episode in 2010.

The story also saw title characters, played by Mathew Horne and Joanna Page, rekindle their spark after visiting the place where they first said “I love you”.

Ruth said: “I think it’s like giving someone a present they really like, they receive it then they go ‘what else have you got?’

“I think just enjoy this special, and then we will see what the next few years bring.”
