Star of the show Mathew spoke to Radio 5 Live on Wednesday about the surprise reunion - which comes amid rumours he and co-star James went through a major fallout.

An excited Mathew confirmed that his character Gavin will be returning to the show as a 'tired dad' with a 'grown-up kid'.

He said: "There’s very, very little I can give away - suffice to say he's a little bit tired... and he’s a dad with an almost grown up child.

"I think the audience will be pleasantly surprised and warmed by what they see ... I have every confidence people are going to really like it."

Viewers had seen married couple Gavin and Stacey struggle to conceive their much-longed for baby during the sitcom's final series.

But it seems there might be a happy ending for the pair afterall. with Mathew describing the new script as 'really beautiful, really funny and really heartwarming.'

He said: "I think there'll be laughter and tears. Ruth and James have done an incredible job particularly considering they live in different countries.

"There’s one scene in particular between me and Joanna which is absolutely beautiful. I was talking to Jo yesterday and we can’t wait to get going on it," teased Mathew.

Mathew, 40, said he was also relieved to find there was no need to heal his 'rift' with James Corden.

Following the success of Gavin & Stacey between 2007 and 2019, the pair became something of a double act starring in their own comedy show Horne & Corden and then movie Lesbian Vampire Killers.

But when both their efforts flopped, the pals went their separate ways sparking rumours of a fallout.

James, who went on to land his own talk show in the US, previously admitted how he didn't speak to Matt for months afterwards as they tried to establish themselves as 'independent entertainers'.

Speaking to the Mirror in 2016 about James' success overseas, Matt said: "Jealousy isn’t something I do - I am not a jealous person. I am thrilled and about the success he is having.”

Speaking on the BBC radio show, Matt said he was 'overwhelmed' by the response from fans about the show's comeback.

"We are all really surprised and shocked in a good way" he said.

Matt then revealed that filming will be taking part in the summer for the one-off episode scheduled to air on Christmas Day.
