Gavin and Stacey fans slam 'race row' accusations and BBC respond

Fans of hit BBC comedy Gavin and Stacey have slammed accusations the show is at the centre of a 'race row' as there is little evidence anyone actually finds it offensive.

And a spokesperson for the BBC has now said there are no plans to remove it from iPlayer.

This week has seen a number of shows pulled from streaming sites in their entirety, edited or had episodes removed in an anti-racism move by various channels and providers.

Little Britain, Come Fly With Me and The League of Gentlemen have disappeared from Netflix, while an episode of Fawlty Towers has been edited from UKTV.

Ant and Dec have also issued an apology over past episodes of Saturday Night Takeaway which saw them impersonate people of different races in their Undercover pranks.

And now, as some reports suggest that Gavin and Stacey is the latest show at the 'centre of a race row', fans and even those viewers who aren't loyal watchers of the show don't believe that people could be offended by it.

The long-running sitcom, written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, features a character called 'Chinese Alan', but he is given this name because of his love of a Chinese takeaway, which becomes immediately obvious if you've ever seen him on the show.

And it's for that reason that people can't fathom why there would be legitimate calls for Gavin and Stacey to be removed. One wrote: "Nobody and I mean nobody wants to remove Inbetweeners and Gavin & Stacey. It's being stirred up to create more anger towards the BLM protesters," and another tweeted: "Do you know anyone - politically left or right - that actually wants #GavinandStacey or #Inbetweeners removed?"

A third reacted: "Can someone show me any evidence that someone is calling for #gavinandstacey to be removed from @BBCiPlayer "

The BBC have now responded to confirm Gavin and Stacey won't be removed, saying: "This change only affects Little Britain."

You'll struggle to find many tweets actually calling for Gavin and Stacey to be removed from streaming sites.

We found one, which read: "Do you think it is acceptable for a white man to play a character referred to casually as "Chinese Alan"? You need to issue a full and frank grovelling apology. I find it VERY offensive."
