Gavin and Stacey cast will reunite for brand new Christmas Day show - with a twist

Gavin and Stacey fans left disappointed at the Christmas TV schedule this year will be pleased to know the cast are still reuniting this festive season.

The release of the BBC's 2020 Christmas programming had left some fans divided - with many voicing their upset that Gavin, Stacey, Smithy and the gang would not be back on the box.

The 2019 special had been a huge hit with fans of the comedy series with many people hoping to find out if Smithy ever did accept Nessa's shock proposal.

While fans will have to wait for a TV return, Joanna Page and Mathew Horne and the rest of the cast have promised to fill the void.

The duo have announced they will be hosting a festive special on BBC Radio Wales with their former co-stars.

They will be joined by the likes of Larry Lamb, Alison Steadman, Melanie Walters, Steffan Rhodri and Robert Wilfort.

While co-creator James Corden has also recorded a very special message from his home in Los Angeles.

"When it came up that we could do a Christmas Day show I knew that if there was anybody I'd want to share that with, it's Mat. I love working with him, he's so much fun," said Joanna, who plays Stacey.

Mathew said he 'jumped at the chance' to reunite with his co-stas.

"I love working with Jo, I love Wales and I love doing radio.

"Christmas Day is a special day and, particularly this year, it's been very challenging for a lot of people, so it's nice to feel like we might be bringing a little bit of joy," he added.

Last year's Christmas special broke records as it became the most watched UK scripted TV show of the last decade.

A whopping 17.1 million viewers tuned in to watch the return of the much-loved show.

Only sporting events and the 2010 X Factor final - where Matt Cardle beat One Direction - achieved higher ratings.

Gavin and Stacey's special was also the most watched comedy since Only Fools and Horses's penultimate episode in 2002.

Listen to Christmas Day with Joanna Page and Mathew Horne from 12:00 GMT until 14:00 on BBC Radio Wales, and on the BBC Sounds App
