Gavin and Stacey breaks Christmas TV records with highest ratings since 2008

If you tuned in to the Gavin and Stacey special on Christmas Day special, you were not alone.

An incredible 11.48 million viewers witnessed the return of the best loved BBC sitcom, with figures reaching a peak of 12.3 million.

Delighted fans caught up with the title characters and their pals 10 years after we last saw them on New Year’s Day 2010.

And it was Nessa and Smithy who took centre stage in the hour-long episode with a shock proposal.

After Smithy’s girlfriend Sonia went down like a led balloon with the group before scurrying off to her mum’s, Nessa declared her love for Smith and got down on one knee - just before the credits started rolling.

The show was such a hit with fans it brought in the biggest overnight Christmas Day audience rating in 11 years.

Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death peaked with 14.4 million in 2008.

Pointless star Richard Osman broke the news to his Twitter followers and congratulated the programme for its success.

He wrote: “Wow, 11.48m viewers for #GavinandStacey last night. Peaked at 12.3m.

“That’s the biggest Christmas Day audience for a very long time. Incredible.”

So incredible, in fact, it drew in more than the audience of Strictly Come Dancing (5.5m) and Call The Midwife (5.2m) put together.

Elsewhere the Queen’s Speech attracted 6.4m people, while Mrs Brown’s Boys reached 4.4m.

Fans of the show were left hanging with the mega cliffhanger - and Ruth Jones, who writes the show with James Corden, has hinted that there could be more episodes  in the pipeline.

She told The Sun: “Obviously with the way it ends, there is room for more.

“It’s a shame we didn’t have more time when we were writing so we could have written more, then have it all ready to go.

"But it was such a challenge to get that special filmed.”
