Gauhati HC seeks reply on tender status for Boragaon waste plant

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has sought a reply from the Assam government as well as the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) as to when they would complete the process of floating a tender for setting up a waste management plant in the Boragaon area so that the construction of the waste plant could then be taken up at the earliest.

A bench of Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Malasri Nandi was dealing with two PILs regarding the matter on Tuesday.

S Bora, learned standing counsel for the GMC, submitted before the court that as far as dumping of garbage at Chandrapur is concerned, it has been temporarily stopped and the GMC authorities have identified a new suitable place at Boragaon to set up a garbage dumping and treatment plant.

For this, he submitted, the GMC had floated a tender and the process of examination of technical and financial bids had already been concluded and the GMC authorities were awaiting administrative clearance from the state government for awarding the tender to the successful bidder. He also submitted that once the clearance is given by the state government, the tender will be awarded to start the work at the earliest.

Appreciating the steps taken by the GMC, the court said, "We are of the view that the said tender process must be concluded at the earliest... we would like to know from both the GMC and the state as to when this tender process would be concluded by way of award to the successful bidder so that the work can be commenced at the earliest without any delay."
