Gaucho announces Newcastle opening date as new Argentinian restaurant aims to raise the steaks

An opening date has now been revealed for the eagerly-awaited Newcastle branch of Agentinian steak house Gaucho.

For weeks, passers-by have been teased with cowboy images on the windows of the new restaurant's prime city centre location, screening the sight of workers transforming its interior. But people won't have to be patient much longer as all will be revealed on March 11 when Gaucho will open its doors.

The company has picked a top spot on the corner of Market Street and Pilgrim Street - opposite the fomer Stack site - for its first restaurant in the North East. Taking up the length of space previously occupied by a branch of Virgin Money, it is set to impress with an upmarket interior to match a menu which boasts the finest steak in the world.

And that beef will be from from Black Angus cattle and '100% carbon-neutral'. Ever since news of the restaurant was announced, there has been much anticipation about what to expect from the new arrival and latest images reveal the kind of dining environment customers can expect.

The interior of the listed building will feature the company's trademark stylish decor with extra inspiration taken from the North East's own proud heritage.

Metal, decorative coloured glass and lighting are being used in homage to pioneering local work in railways, ship-building, glass-making and the invention of the light bulb. The look will be combined with luxury, captured in a glamorous cocktail bar and private dining room which will be available for hire.

The restaurant launch is set to be something of a homecoming for Gaucho chief executive officer Martin Williams, an award-winning entrepreneur who is the son of school teachers from Houghton le Spring and Durham.

The company says it has made a seven-figure investment in its Newcastle restaurant, which will form part of its general drive to become net zero in carbon emissions by 2040.

The restaurant, which will serve a lunch menu and an evening à la carte menu including a range of modern Argentinan dishes, will also have a 'sustainable drinks programme' promoting biodynamic and organic wines; operate a zero food-to-landfill policy and run on 100% renewable energy. Its opening is also creating 80 jobs.
