Gatwick Airport strikes suspended after 'significantly improved' pay offer

Gatwick has abandoned plans for a third runway (Picture: AP)

Planned strikes by Gatwick Airport staff have been suspended after a “dramatically improved” pay offer was made.

ICTS security workers were due to stage a 48-hour walk-out from 6am on Saturday, with a further four-day strike to begin on August 20.

But the union said that following "extremely productive" talks on Wednesday, an improved offer has been made.

The workers will now be balloted on the new offer with a recommendation to accept.

Unite said ICTS has made a commitment to become a fully accredited real living wage employer, the first company at Gatwick Airport to do so.

Unite regional officer Jamie Major said: "The commitment by ICTS to become a real living wage employer is welcome and Unite will be applying pressure to other Gatwick employers to follow suit."

The news comes just one day after strikes at Heathrow were suspended while more than 4,000 workers vote on a new pay offer.

However, it warned strikes already planned for August 23 and 24 "remained on the table until the result of the ballot was known".
