Indeed, Italy recently parted ways with Luciano Spalletti, despite a 2-0 win over Moldova on Monday. Gattuso is in 'pole position' to replace the 66-year-old in the national team dugout, claims gianlucadimarzio.com.
Gattuso has previously taken charge of a host of clubs including Sion, Palermo, Crete, Pisa, AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Marseille.
He spent just over a year at Rangers as a teenager, making 45 appearances across which he scored five goals.
Gattuso won a World Cup with Italy as a player, and he now looks likely to take charge of his country in a rather surprising switch.
Elsewhere, former Rangers chief Ross Wilson is reportedly among the candidates under consideration for a vacancy at Newcastle United.
The Daily Mail claims the Nottingham Forest sporting director is in the frame for the same position at St James' Park.
Wilson, 41, has been in post at Forest since 2023 after he departed Ibrox. He held a similar position previously at Southampton.
