Gators stop Badgers, move on to Elite Eight

NEW YORK _ Wisconsin fans can forget about another Final Four run for the outgoing senior class.

For the second consecutive season, UW saw its season end in the Sweet 16.

Last season it was a late collapse against Notre Dame.

On Friday at Madison Square Garden the end came because UW blew an early 11-point lead, missed crucial free throws and then gave up a three-pointer at the overtime buzzer by reserve guard Chris Chiozza.

The result: No. 4 Florida stunned the eighth-seeded Badgers, 84-83.

UW, which wiped out an eight-point deficit in the final 2 minutes 54 seconds of regulation, made just 20 of 30 free-throw attempts.

Nigel Hayes hit 2 of 2 attempts to give UW an 83-81 lead but Chiozza (eight points) used his speed to knife through the defense to hit a floater.

Hayes scored 22 points to lead UW but missed 7 of 14 free-throw attempts. He missed 4 of 10 attempts in the overtime.

Ethan Happ added 21 points for UW.

Zak Showalter, who hit a game-tying three-pointer with 2.5 seconds left in regulation, added 14.

Bronson Koenig added 13 but hit just 4 of 13 shots and was ineffective in the overtime because of a right-hamstring injury suffered in the final seconds of regulation.

KeVaughn Allen scored 35 points to lead the Gators to set up an all-SEC regional final Sunday. Six of his points came on free throws in the first half after he was fouled while attempting three-pointers.

The Gators face seventh-seeded South Carolina, which manhandled No. 3 Baylor, 70-50, in the first game Friday.

UW, which lost Vitto Brown to fouls and saw three other players with four fouls, finished the season 27-10.

The Badgers wiped out an eight-point deficit in the final 2 minutes 54 seconds of regulation.

Happ had a huge basket inside to give UW a four-point lead in the overtime and it two huge free throws with 1:09 left to push the lead to 80-75.

UW missed five free throws and the Gators forged an 81-81 tie on a drive by Chiozza with 24 seconds left.

That came after Canyon Barry blocked Khalil Iverson, who was driving in for a dunk.

Hayes was fouled with four seconds left. Hayes, 5 of 12 from the line, made both for an 83-81 lead.

UW saw victory snatched from its grasp when Chiozza hit a floating three-pointer at the buzzer.

Game over.

Season over.

"Just knowing that it's the last one that it can be over," Hayes said before the game, "you just want to make sure you go out and don't leave a bad taste in your mouth...

"So you leave everything out there that you can and you want to make sure that you put your best foot forward and we don't speak about negative things. Yeah, so we just want to come out and make sure we do what we can to try and win."

UW's players and coaches will need a long time to get rid of the sour taste from this defeat.

Koenig entered the night averaging 22.5 points and shooting 11 of 23 from three-point range (47.8 percent) and 16 of 32 overall (50 percent) in two NCAA Tournament games.

Florida limited him to three points and three field-goal attempts in the first half.

"We have got to limit the amount of threes taken," Florida coach Mike White said before the game. "Obviously Koenig can't get anything easy. He's too good of a player. He's had an unbelievable run here as of late.

"And those other guys Happ and Hayes, again, we have got to limit their touches, nothing can be easy for them. They can't live at the foul line."

UW got to the line 30 times and died there because of 10 misses.
