GAINESVILLE, Fla. _ The Florida Gators are pausing team activities due to an increase in positive COVID-19 cases among players, putting Saturday's game against LSU in jeopardy.
UF announced earlier Tuesday five new positive COVID-19 cases among football players during the past week of testing.
Florida athletics director Scott Stricklin released the following statement on Tuesday:
"The University of Florida football team has experienced an increase in positive COVID tests among players this week. Out of an abundance of caution, team activities are paused as of Tuesday afternoon.
"Head coach Dan Mullen has been in communication with football players and their parents, and I have had conversations with the Southeastern Conference office, last week's opponent Texas A&M, and this week's opponent LSU.
"These circumstances will be re-evaluated by UF Health and the athletic department's sports medicine staff Wednesday."
The Gators (2-1) were scheduled to play LSU (1-2) Saturday in the Swamp. Kickoff had been moved to 4 p.m. and the game was going to air on ESPN. UF is looking to rebound from a narrow loss at Texas A&M (1-2).
