A Gateshead social club has closed after a customer tested positive for coronavirus.
The Gateshead Legion Club is undergoing a deep clean over the weekend after having a Covid-19 case confirmed.
Manager Jeff Moutter said the club received confirmation that a customer had tested positive on Thursday afternoon.
He said the person was self-isolating, as were a number of other customers who had been sitting near them in the club.
The venue has been advised by Public Health England that it does not need to close under the current guidelines, but took the decision to shut over the weekend so it could be cleaned by an external company.
It is expected to reopen around the middle of next week.
Jeff said the customer had been in touch with the NHS Track and Trace system, as well as the club’s own tracing system.
The club provided a statement which read: “The club has spoken to Public Health England, who have advised us that we have the right measures in place and do not need to remain closed.
“They have informed us that anyone who was identified as a contact through NHS Track and Trace will already have been informed.
“They also reassured us of what we need to do to ensure the club is safe for staff and customers.
“We would remind anyone who has symptoms of Covid-19 to self-isolate and have a test as soon as possible.”
It is the latest hospitality venue to be hit by Covid-19 cases this week, after KFC Byker and McDonald's in West Denton had an employee each test positive for the virus.
Miller & Carter announced yesterday that it was temporarily closing its Gosforth Park after three staff members were confirmed to have the virus.
