Gateshead schoolgirl taken to hospital following 'altercation' with another pupil

A girl suffered a cut to her leg following an altercation with another pupil at her school.

The incident involving two girls took place at Heworth Grange School, in Heworth, Gateshead, on Friday.

One of the youngsters received a small cut to her leg, believed to have been caused by a piece of stationery.

Northumbria Police were contacted and officers say the injury was minor but the pupil was taken to hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the school says an investigation has been carried out and the incident is being dealt with in line with its behaviour policy.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly before 10am on Friday (October 16) we received a report of an altercation between two pupils at Heworth Grange Comprehensive School.

"During the altercation a girl received a small cut to her leg, believed to have been caused by a piece of stationery. The injury was minor but the schoolgirl was taken to hospital where she received treatment.

"We remain in contact with the children, their parents and the school to establish the circumstances around the incident."

In a statement, Allie Denholm, headteacher at Heworth Grange, said: "Following a recent incident at our school, I want to stress the importance we place on pupil and staff safety. It has been and always will be our priority.

"Following the incident, staff responded immediately and appropriately, taking the necessary steps to safeguard students. A full investigation into the incident has taken place with appropriate action taken up.

"While I cannot share specific details, please know the incident is being dealt with in line with our behaviour policy.

"We will always address behaviour that falls short of our expectations at Heworth Grange – especially where this impacts our community."
