Gateshead recycling centre fire extinguished as operator launches investigation

Fire crews have worked through the night to extinguish the large fire at a Gateshead recycling centre.

The blaze broke out early on Sunday at the Campdown Recycling Centre, in Wrekenton.

Crews were called to Springwell Road at around 2.28am and were battling the fire throughout the day.

Emergency services said that no one was injured as a result of the fire.

Pictures taken on Monday morning show the smoke damaged building and firefighters continuing work at the scene.

A spokesperson for SUEZ recycling and recovery UK said an investigation will now be launched to determine the cause of the fire.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service had no further update on the investigation at this time but confirmed that the blaze had now been put out.

A spokesperson said: "Crews have worked hard through the night and have extinguished the fire.

"We will be gradually scaling back operations this morning and hope to be off site by this afternoon."

There are still three appliances, an officer, a command support unit and a high volume pumping unit at the scene.
